What is a root word?

A root is the core or the basic part of a word without any prefixes or suffixes added to it. The smallest part of a word means something.

Some words have more than one root. These words are then called compound words.

Example: lovely = The basic part of the word that can stand on its own is "love".

slowly = slow (root) + ly (suffix)

smiled = smile
